Located at the edge of the Crossroads Art District, the Planetarium will expand not only the footprint of the art district on First Friday, May 1, it will also expand the local definition of art as �Once and Future Cities� fills the dome with unique visuals and audio soundscapes, the likes of which have never been experienced in Kansas City before. �Once and Future Cities� is the creation of Bentley Ousley, local artist, computer programmer, composer and musician who has brought together an international team of �code� artists and fractal designers, to create this 45-minute immersive experience. Over the past decade, Ousley has worked extensively with electronic compositions, one of which earned him the grand prize in the Warner Brothers Pictures� �Inspiring the Future� competition. He learned about fractals while researching visuals to pair with his music. Ousley said, �When I discovered fractal art, I became so enthralled with what these artists were doing, I thought it only appropriate that they have a canvas more in keeping with the scale of their ambitions. So, instead of a panel on a web page, I�ve adapted their work for the 60 foot, 360 x 180 degree dome of the Gottlieb Planetarium.�� Fractals are images created by mathematical formulas. �When you look at these amazing images,� Ousley said, �it�s hard to believe they weren�t created in the traditional sense � no direct manipulation of visual input whatever. Instead, they were created by expressing mathematical formulas through computer code. These formulas become both their paint brush and canvas. These �recipes for universe creation� are amazingly compact, most often expressed in just a couple hundred lines of computer code! These fractal designers manage to distill the essence of both natural and man-made processes and landscapes into concise mathematical formulas and express them through the creation of amazingly engaging and believable miniature universes!� Well, not so �miniature� after May 1st. The show begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1. Tickets for the event will be $15. You can purchase tickets in advance through Science City�s website or at the entrance of Science City on the day of the event. Proceeds from �Once and Future Cities� will support After the Harvest, a local, grass-roots hunger-relief organization started in 2014. After the Harvest�s mission is to prevent hunger by rescuing fresh, nutritious produce that would otherwise be wasted and distributing it to organizations feeding hungry people. With the help of volunteers, After the Harvest gleans fresh produce from regional farms, farmers� markets and orchards, and distributes it to local feeding agencies. The nonprofit also secures large truckloads of donated fruits and vegetables from large, commercial producers across the country, and delivers them to food banks including Harvesters � the Community Food Network. After the Harvest has set a goal of providing 3.3 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to feed hungry people in Missouri and Kansas in 2015. In addition to receiving proceeds from the May 1st showing of �Once and Future Cities�, After the Harvest will also benefit from proceeds raised at a VIP event at Gottlieb Planetarium on Saturday, April 25, which will include a reception at 6 p.m., followed by an exclusive early viewing of �Once and Future Cities� at 7 p.m. Tickets for the VIP reception are $100, and can be purchased on the web at aftertheharvestkc.org or by calling 816-921-1903. ______________________________________ |
